About this class
Every individual receives various gifts from G-d throughout their life, be it financial prosperity, intellectual prowess, or personal charm. These gifts are not inherently good or bad, but rather their nature is determined by how they are utilized. A gift can be a clear blessing if it is used to help others, support the community, and maintain humility. Conversely, if a person becomes arrogant, uses their wealth or wisdom to harm others, or to merely flaunt their status, the gift can become a punishment, leading them further down a negative path.
The concept of a 'test' (nisayon) is central: G-d places individuals in a neutral zone, providing them with resources and the choice to direct them towards good or ill. The class emphasizes that true humility lies in acknowledging that all gifts originate from G-d and are intended to be channeled outwards, like a pipe, to benefit the world. When one acts as a conduit for G-d's blessings, more blessings are bestowed. However, if a gift becomes a constant source of worry, stress, or a nuisance, it signifies a long-term test of faith (emunah).
The ultimate goal is to approach every gift as an opportunity to build and contribute, rather than letting it define one's self-worth or lead to arrogance. By consciously choosing to apply one's gifts for positive purposes and remaining humble, an individual can ensure that G-d's endowments become enduring blessings, not curses.
Key points
- Every gift from G-d, whether wealth, wisdom, or charm, can manifest as a blessing, a test, or a punishment, depending on how it is utilized.
- A gift becomes a blessing when it is used to help others, support the community, and maintain personal humility.
- Arrogance and self-serving use of gifts can turn them into a punishment, leading an individual further away from their spiritual path.
- G-d treats individuals like conduits; the more effectively one channels blessings outwards, the more blessings G-d bestows.
- True humility involves recognizing that all abilities and possessions are from G-d, meant to be channeled for the good of the world, and not for personal aggrandizement.
