AFC South Preview | NFL Roster Cuts & UCLA's Financial Crisis — Coach and Company | Tues September 1

Dela

It's September 1st, and that means football is officially here. The Coach, Mikey P, and Soupy open the show with one of the most emotional days on the NFL calendar: roster cutdown day. The guys react to the viral video of undrafted rookie QB Joe Fagnano making the Baltimore Ravens' 53-man roster and calling his parents to share the news. Soupy, a UConn guy, shares his pride in Fagnano's journey from undrafted free agent to QB3, and the guys discuss the brutal reality facing players who don't make the cut — including the former Seahawk who was working as a substitute teacher and getting his real estate license before getting a second chance. The Coach also shares the incredible story of PGA Tour pro Ben Griffin, who was working in financial services six years ago before a random round of golf with a CEO changed his life — a reminder that sometimes it just takes one person believing in you.

In Front Page News, the guys dive into the bombshell out of Westwood: UCLA fired athletic director Martin Jarmond after six years, citing a "significant financial deficit" that once reached $241 million and still sits at over $21 million. Jarmond is owed $6.5 million on his way out, and former Lakers executive Tim Harris will take over as interim AD. The guys debate whether this is a cautionary tale for the NIL era, why football is the only sport that truly subsidizes athletic departments, and why paying coaches who are no longer at the school is crippling programs across the country.

The conversation takes a lighter turn with Naomi Osaka's show-stopping US Open entrance, where the two-time champion paid tribute to Allen Iverson with a custom hooded gown and cornrows styled by Law Roach. The guys are split on whether the fashion statement adds to her aura or should be saved for after the match — but they all agree she's thinking about her brand within the brand.

Finally, it's the AFC South preview. Soupy and The Coach are riding with Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars, the third-youngest team in the league with an elite pass rush and a chip on their shoulder after last year's playoff loss to the Bills. Mikey P is planting his flag with Cam Ward and the Tennessee Titans, who added Robert Saleh as head coach, Brian Daboll as offensive coordinator, and rookie wideout Carnell Tate. The guys also debate whether Daniel Jones can bounce back from his Achilles injury for the Colts, and why this is a make-or-break season for C.J. Stroud in Houston — if he doesn't step up, the Texans could look to reset at quarterback despite their elite defense.
