Fiona Soe Paing's Sand, Silt, Sand had me trollbunden (as we would say in Swedish) this morning at Greenside Venue on George St, Edinburgh/Scotland. The show, or hang on, the performance, the ritual or memorial -who knows- brings the past right into the present, and, as you know already, I greet a lot; I had to fight back the tears. The work emerged from Fiona’s discovery of a family connection to renowned ballad singer John Strachan; it weaves ancient ballads, new compositions, film and performance into an innovative twist on tradition. I am so chuffed that Fiona Soe Paing agreed to do an episode with me in the middle of the Fringe Festival, and by singing in her grandmother's and mother's dialect, Doric, she brings them back into the room through her voice. Now, you are invited to join us and listen. The harvest is here. What will you gather into your basket to replant in the spring, and what will you leave behind to return to the dark soil?
