Cowboys on one side. Indians on the other. It’s one of the most familiar pictures of the American West. But how did that picture become the story?
In this episode of Way Out West, follow the money from the cattle business to the business of selling the West itself. A Cherokee grazing agreement reveals relationships that don’t fit the familiar conflict. Buffalo Bill’s Wild West shows how real people and authentic skills became part of a carefully staged spectacle. And Sitting Bull’s 1885 participation brings recent history into the arena as paid entertainment.
Hollywood inherited much of this framework. Dime novels, stage dramas, and Wild West shows were already compressing different places, decades, and relationships into roles audiences could recognize.
The remarkable part? It began while the Old West was still alive.
