Ashley shares her experience navigating a complicated intersection of trauma, substance use, homelessness, and the systems that are supposed to help but fail us time and time again.
Ashley talks openly about living with the effects of Fetal Alcohol Effects, BPD, anxiety, severe depression, ADHD, complex post traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD), PMOS/PCOS and attachment issues stemming from her many traumatic experiences in the foster system.
We talk about substance use, including being three years clean from meth, fentanyl, and heroin, and the realities of trying to survive while experiencing homelessness in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (DTES).
While this isn't a true crime podcast it's virtually impossible to explain the DTES without talking about Canada's most prolific serial killer Robert Pickton and his ability to get away with as many as 49 murders of women that police agencies didn't care to look for or investigate - despite having ample evidence pointing right to him. If you are interested in a thorough deep dive I recommend the book On the Farm: Robert William Pickton and the Tragic Story of Vancouver's Missing Women. The stories of these women cannot be forgotten - nor can the countless women, especially Indigenous women, who go missing across Canada to this day for whom justice is never found.
