Episode 84: The Sogdians — The Merchants of the Silk Road explores the Iranian-speaking people of Central Asia who became major intermediaries across the Silk Road. Centered around cities such as Samarkand, Bukhara, and Panjikent, Sogdian merchants created communities across Central Asia and China, moving goods, information, religions, and diplomatic contacts between distant societies. The episode examines the Ancient Letters, Sogdian settlements in China, their role in trade and diplomacy, their language, religious diversity, and the remarkable murals of Samarkand and Panjikent. Although conquest and cultural change eventually ended their distinct political identity, the Sogdians helped connect East and West for centuries.
