The Etruscans — The Civilization Before Rome

The Etruscans were a powerful civilization that flourished in central Italy before the rise of Roman dominance. Organized into independent city-states, they became wealthy through agriculture, mining, craftsmanship, and Mediterranean trade. Their religion, engineering, architecture, political symbols, and ceremonial traditions had a profound influence on early Rome. Although Rome gradually conquered Etruscan territory, it absorbed many aspects of Etruscan culture. Because their language is only partly understood and most of their literature has disappeared, the Etruscans remain one of the most mysterious civilizations of ancient Europe.
