The Oxus Civilization, also known as the Bactria–Margiana Archaeological Complex, flourished across parts of modern Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, and Uzbekistan during the Bronze Age. It built fortified settlements, developed irrigation agriculture, produced sophisticated metalwork and stone art, and participated in trade networks connecting Mesopotamia, Iran, the Indus Valley, and the Eurasian steppes. Its people left no clearly readable written records, making their religion, language, and political organization difficult to reconstruct. Environmental change, shifting rivers, disrupted trade, and interaction with steppe populations likely contributed to its gradual decline. Its rediscovery revealed Central Asia as an important center of ancient urban life rather than merely a passage between greater civilizations.
