Is Anyone in the Loop? Algorithmic Management, Europe's Platform Work Deadline, and How Leaders Can Keep Humans Accountable for Automated Decisions

Dela

Abstract: Software now assigns work, sets pace, scores performance, and in some organizations suspends or ends working relationships with little or no human involvement. This article examines algorithmic management as a leadership and governance challenge at a moment of regulatory change. It reviews the European Union's Platform Work Directive, which member states must transpose by 2 December 2026, alongside recent enforcement, including a Dutch data protection fine of nearly €825 million against Uber for fully automated driver deactivations. It defines algorithmic management, summarizes evidence on its prevalence from an OECD survey of more than 6,000 firms in six countries, and synthesizes research on its consequences for performance, legitimacy, autonomy, and wellbeing. Drawing on documented cases in ride-hailing, food delivery, warehousing, software, and retail, it sets out five evidence-based responses: getting employment status right, inventorying and risk-tiering automated decisions, guaranteeing meaningful human review, making metrics explainable and proportionate, and co-governing systems with workers. It concludes with guidance on building long-term algorithmic governance capability.
