The Silent Struggle: Why Men Hide Mental Health Challenges at Work, and How Leaders Can Make Help-Seeking Normal

Dela

Abstract: Men frequently conceal stress, burnout, and mental health struggles at work, even as employers expand access to support. Recent surveys indicate that most employed men in the United States have hidden such struggles at least occasionally, that few would feel comfortable seeking help, and that employer support often goes unused despite near-universal availability. This article synthesizes research on masculine norms, distress concealment, and help-seeking to explain why concealment persists and what it costs organizations and individuals, from presenteeism and turnover to elevated suicide rates in male-dominated industries such as mining and construction. It then reviews evidence on five organizational responses: peer-led support networks, manager training, visible leadership and disclosure-safe policies, support redesigned around how men seek help, and changes to work design integrated with suicide prevention and safety systems. Drawing on documented examples from construction, mining, transport, farming, emergency services, banking, professional services, sport, and the military, the article concludes with guidance for building long-term help-seeking capability.
