The 28th Infantry Division has long been maligned for its perceived performance during the Battle of the Bulge. The Bloody Bucket Division fought through the Battle of France, marched during the Liberation of Paris, and was for all intents and purposes, smashed during the Battle of Hurtgen Forest. It was sent to lick its wounds in the ‘quiet sector’ of the Ardennes. Instead, they bore the brunt of the German assault in opening stages of the Battle of the Bulge. Yet, without the 28th’s dogged defense in those early hours, the Bulge could have been a much different story. Join Joe and Walter as they discuss the 28th history and its performance in the Bulge, and how those little pockets of Bloody Bucket soldiers threw the German plan out of whack and allowed sufficient time for the 101st Airborne to arrive and take up positions around Bastogne, allowing for its defense.
