What if fasting and eating more can both be the right answer?
What if pushing harder and recovering more can both improve your health?
What if AMPK and mTOR, autophagy and muscle growth, catabolism and anabolism are not opposing sides you need to choose between, but different biological states your body needs access to?
In Episode 118 of Reality Check Podcast with Jess and Jill, we break down why so much health advice sounds contradictory, and why context is the variable that changes everything.
Your body is constantly adapting to the inputs you repeatedly give it. Training, food, fasting, stress, sleep, recovery, calorie intake, protein, cardio, and strength work all create signals. The goal is not to maximize one signal forever. The goal is to have a body that can respond appropriately to different demands.
We unpack AMPK, mTOR, autophagy, anabolic and catabolic states, metabolic flexibility, hormesis, energy availability, muscle growth, recovery, and longevity in a way that actually connects back to real life.
We also get into why a short-term stressor can be beneficial in one person and become another layer of stress in someone who is already under-eating, overtraining, sleeping poorly, and chronically depleted.
Inside the episode, we cover:
- Why opposite health recommendations can both be biologically correct
- AMPK vs. mTOR and what each pathway actually does
- Why autophagy is not a magical fasting switch
- The difference between anabolic and catabolic states
- Why exercise itself proves that your body needs both breakdown and rebuilding
- How fasting, calorie restriction, HIIT, sauna, cold exposure, and other hormetic stressors can become too much
- Why recovery is part of the adaptation, not an optional add-on
- How chronic dieting and low energy availability can change what your body needs
- Why women who have spent years restricting may need more food, more recovery, and more time at maintenance
- The role of muscle and resistance training in metabolic health and longevity
- Why maintenance phases, diet breaks, and refeeds can be productive
- How metabolic flexibility extends beyond simply burning carbs or fat
- Why sequencing matters more than blindly following the newest health trend
The bigger lesson is simple: a useful intervention only makes sense when you understand the environment you are adding it to.
Fasting after chronic overeating is one context.
Fasting after months of aggressive dieting and high training volume is another.
Hard training after adequate recovery creates one response.
Hard training layered onto poor sleep, low calories, and chronic stress creates a very different one.
Your body does not need you to live in one metabolic state forever. It needs the capacity to build, break down, recover, adapt, use stored energy, handle incoming nutrients, maintain muscle, and respond appropriately to stress.
The goal is not maximal signaling. The goal is regulation, resilience, and metabolic flexibility.
