James Earls is a writer, lecturer, and bodyworker known for challenging the way practitioners understand anatomy. After more than twenty‑five years studying with leaders like Thomas Myers, Art Riggs, and Gary Gray, James realized that clinical anatomy — the “what and where” — has dominated the field at the expense of evolutionary, comparative, developmental, and functional anatomy. According to James, we’ve been trying to build reality from the details instead of organizing the details around the whole organism.
In this conversation, James and Sue explore why the models we use shape what we see, how movement and manual therapy belong together, and why fascia, gait, and foot mechanics reveal a deeper logic about human structure. They also discuss his books Born to Walk and Understanding the Human Foot, and his upcoming project How to Understand Anatomy, which reframes anatomy as a dynamic, adaptive story rather than a static map.
