Ray Copeland was a mean man. He beat his wife. He was abusive to his kids. He also didn't want to work a normal job. He began scheming to steal cattle by writing bad checks and soon, all the auctions in the area refused to sell to Ray. He needed a workaround. He began picking up transient men to work on his small farm in Missouri. He'd have those men write bad checks then he'd quickly sell the herd of cattle and pocket the cash. Then the transient men began to disappear.
