Niel Allen is without question one of the fastest racing drivers I ever saw. A quiet Australian who did things his own way - first by building a commercial property empire in Sydney, then by racing a succession of stunning race cars prepared by the unmatchable Peter Molloy - Niel by the late 1960s/early 1970s was right up there with the best of the many internationals who raced in Australia at that time. From Elans to Mustangs, to F2 and F5000 McLarens and to brutal, CanAm Elfins, Niel was always decisively fast, impeccably neat and super-competitive. He was intelligent, too - a free spirit in the truest sense of those words. I sat down with him in Manly, on Sydney's North Shore, in 2014. He passed away in 2022.
