In February 1978, five men with mental disabilities mysteriously vanished after attending a college basketball game in California. Their abandoned vehicle was later discovered deep in the Sierra Nevada mountains, far off their intended route home. Months later, search teams recovered the decomposed remains of four individuals scattered near a remote forest shelter, while the fifth man was never found. Investigators and families remain puzzled by the tragedy, as there is no definitive evidence to explain why the reliable group traveled into the wilderness or how they ultimately perished. Decades later, this unsettling event continues to remain a perplexing cold case without any official resolution or suspects.
