Trek Thunder Kelly has spent his life testing a radical idea: what if you treated your life itself as a work of art?
Artist, adventurer and longtime friend and mentor of Tyler Ramsey, Trek has worn a tuxedo every day for a year, lived an entire year in one specific shade of blue, ran for Governor of California, sold his possessions and disappeared into the desert, traveled through more than 80 countries, and turned kindness into an international experiment.
Tyler calls it being “recovered from society.”
In this episode of Punk Rock Sober, Trek and Tyler talk about choosing the person you want to become, why discipline creates freedom, keeping promises to yourself, knowing when a chapter of your life is over, forgiveness, friendship, sobriety and the surprising power of small acts of kindness.
Trek also tells an extraordinary story about meeting a stranger on a cliff in Australia. What began with offering the man a photograph became a reminder that we rarely know what another person is going through — and that something seemingly insignificant can change a life.
The conversation turns to Trek's own experiment with sobriety. After being challenged by a friend, he stopped drinking for a year at UCLA — then extended it through all four years of college. For Trek, the larger discovery wasn't simply sobriety. It was learning that keeping a commitment to yourself can fundamentally change what you believe you're capable of doing.
They also explore an idea that might change the way you think about getting older: we can “reincarnate” multiple times during a single lifetime. Careers end. Relationships change. Identities evolve. Instead of holding onto a chapter after it has ended, Trek argues that we can consciously author the next one.
This isn't just a conversation about recovery from substances.
It's about recovering your ability to choose your own life.
