Living for the Will of God. Serving with What God Has Given You. Faithful Through Suffering.

"Above all, maintain constant love for one another, since love covers a multitude of sins." — 1 Peter 4:8

First Peter 4 calls believers to live with a clear sense that our old way of life is behind us. Because Christ suffered in the flesh, Peter says we should be ready to break with sinful desires and spend the rest of our time pursuing the will of God. That kind of life may look strange to the people around us, but Peter reminds us that we are living for something greater than their approval. He calls the church to stay alert in prayer, love one another deeply, practice hospitality, and use whatever gifts God has given us to serve others. Everything we have is meant to be stewarded for the glory of God.

Peter then returns to the reality of suffering. He tells believers not to be surprised by the fiery trial that comes their way, as though something unusual were happening. Suffering for Christ is not evidence that God has abandoned us. Peter says we can even rejoice when we share in Christ's sufferings because His glory will one day be revealed. First Peter 4 reminds us that faithfulness may cost us something, but it is never wasted. Keep loving, keep serving, keep trusting God with your life, and when suffering comes, entrust yourself to your faithful Creator while continuing to do what is good.
