"Be alert, stand firm in the faith, be courageous, be strong. Do everything in love." — 1 Corinthians 16:13–14

First Corinthians 16 may feel like a collection of final instructions and personal greetings, but Paul's closing words show us what the truths of this letter should look like when they are lived out. He begins by giving practical instructions about an offering for struggling believers in Jerusalem. Paul encourages the Corinthians to set something aside regularly according to how God has prospered them. Generosity was not meant to be an occasional emotional response. It was to become a regular part of their discipleship. The gospel changes not only what we believe but also how we view everything God has placed in our hands.

Paul then shares his plans for ministry and gives us an important glimpse into the way he viewed opportunities and opposition. He tells the Corinthians that "a wide door for effective ministry has opened for me, yet many oppose me." We can sometimes assume that opposition means we are headed in the wrong direction. Paul reminds us that an open door from God does not necessarily mean an easy road. Sometimes the greatest opportunities for the gospel come with the greatest resistance. Our calling is not to look for the path with the least difficulty but to faithfully walk through the doors God opens.

Paul's final instructions beautifully summarize much of the letter: be alert, stand firm in the faith, be courageous, be strong, and do everything in love. Strength and love belong together in the Christian life. We are called to stand firmly on truth without becoming harsh, and to love people deeply without compromising truth. That balance reflects the heart of Christ. As First Corinthians comes to a close, Paul reminds us that everything we have studied about unity, holiness, freedom, spiritual gifts, worship, love, and resurrection is meant to shape the way we actually live. Stand firm. Stay faithful. Love well. And keep serving Christ wherever He opens the door.
