Creating Space for Work: The Worshipful Master and Time

Dela

The Worshipful Master holds the 24-inch gauge differently than anyone else in the lodge. Where the secretary measures and the treasurer evaluates, the Worshipful Master governs — deciding how much time each kind of work deserves, and whether the time allocated is serving the outcome or undermining it. This perspective is about creating the right conditions for work to happen, not just finding room for it in a schedule.

Brian introduces the Pareto Principle here not as a productivity cliche but as a genuine operating insight: 80% of the work tends to take 20% of the available time. The implication cuts both ways. Giving something too little time is an obvious problem, but giving it too much time can be just as destructive — Parkinson's Law being the other edge of the same blade. Work expands to fill the time allotted. The Worshipful Master's function is to resist both failure modes.

This is also where the episode extends beyond personal development into leadership. As a leader, knowing when more time actually degrades output — and being willing to act on that knowledge — is a skill that develops through experimentation and accumulated self-knowledge. It starts small, with single tasks, and grows into a durable intuition about people and work.

  • How the Worshipful Master's role changes the entire function of the 24-inch gauge
  • The Pareto Principle as a time allocation framework, not just a business concept
  • Why too much time on a task can produce worse outcomes than too little
  • Building discernment about time through experimentation with smaller pieces of work
  • Leading others with the 24-inch gauge: when generosity with time helps and when it hurts
  • Developing judgment about time as a compounding skill over years

Discernment about time is not something you reason your way into once. It is something you develop through repeated contact with the tool from this specific perspective.
