The Secretary's Gauge: Auditing How You Spend Time

Dela

The 24-inch gauge is one of the first working tools a Mason receives, and most lodges leave it at that. Brian Mattocks — author of A Mason's Work: The Operative Method for Masonic Self-Development — treats it differently. The tool only becomes useful when you know which perspective you're holding it from, and this episode starts with the secretary's apron.

The secretary's function inside the mental lodge is to separate fact from feeling — to determine what is fit to be committed to the record. Applied to time management, that means resisting the urge to declare yourself bad at managing time and instead asking whether you actually have the data to support that claim. Do you have a categorized account of your day, hour by hour? Do you know where the time went, or are you working from a vague sense of dissatisfaction? That distinction matters before any solution is worth attempting.

The inventory process Brian describes here is straightforward but often skipped: track what you actually did, then measure it against the three traditional divisions of the gauge — vocation, relief of others, and rest and refreshment. The secretary doesn't solve the problem. The secretary defines it accurately enough that a solution becomes possible.

  • Why a feeling of poor time management is not the same as a time management problem
  • How the secretary's role functions as a fact-finding lens inside the mental lodge
  • Building a real-time inventory of how your hours are spent
  • The three divisions of the 24-inch gauge as a practical audit framework
  • Tools for tracking time, from notebooks to professional billing habits
  • Distinguishing misaligned time from mismanaged time

The secretary hands you data. What you do with it depends on which apron you put on next.
