We spend a lot of time learning how to resolve conflict. But knowing when not to try may be just as important.

In this episode, we will explore seven brain states that can compromise our ability to navigate conflict effectively: from being tired, hungry, or chronically stressed to feeling emotionally escalated, having an unmet core need, being under the influence, or trying to resolve an issue in front of an audience.

Each of these states can interfere with the reasoning, empathy, perspective-taking, and self-control that productive conflict resolution requires.

I'll break down the neuroscience behind these seven states, how to recognize when your thinking brain isn’t operating at its best, and what to do instead of forcing a difficult conversation at the wrong time.

Sometimes good conflict resolution isn’t about knowing what to say. It’s knowing when you’re ready to say it.
