In his letters written from prison, Bonhoeffer wonders what faith will look like after the war. He criticizes Christians who want to return to former version of religious belief and practice. Instead, he wonders what the future of Christian faith might be—one that engages the world without fear and without overspiritualization. Bonhoeffer’s vision for a worldly form of faith is one that takes the world seriously; it’s a version of Christian faith that takes human life seriously. This means engaging in science, politics, economics, etc. without the need to colonize these areas of life with religious and spiritual language. It means recognizing the presence of Jesus Christ in the midst of human life as God’s embrace of this world. This episode continues a discussion of my new book Unbelievers: Secular Faith and the End of the Culture War. You can purchase a copy online at Lumberjack Theology Publications.
