Waiting can feel like a closed door, but Acts 1 treats it like training. We walk through the opening chapter of Acts where the risen Jesus teaches about the kingdom of God, then gives a surprising instruction: stay in Jerusalem and wait for the promise of the Holy Spirit. That command reframes delay as discipleship. If you’ve been stuck in the space between what God promised and what you can see, this meditation helps you breathe and re-centre.
We also sit with the disciples’ question about the restoration of Israel’s kingdom and Jesus’ gentle but firm redirect. The timeline is not theirs to control. The calling is clear: receive power from the Holy Spirit and become witnesses to the ends of the earth. It’s a needed correction for anyone tempted to chase control, certainty or influence instead of obedience. Acts 1 puts the emphasis on spiritual power that produces faithful witness, not political mastery.
From the ascension and the angels’ promise of Christ’s return, we move into the upper room where about 120 believers commit themselves to unity and prayer. We then look at Peter guiding the community to address Judas’ vacancy, praying and choosing Matthias to restore the symbolic completeness of the twelve. The episode closes with space to reflect and a simple set of affirmations: as we wait, we pray and obey, trusting that God prepares us for purposeful action.
