What if some of the forces contributing to pain and dysfunction simply aren’t visible on the tests we commonly use?
In this short road reflection, I explore why fascial restrictions can be difficult to identify with conventional imaging such as X-rays, MRIs, and CT scans. Fascia is much more than the spiderweb-like fibers we often see in photographs. It is part of a living, fluid-filled connective tissue system, and when that system becomes restricted or solidified, it can interfere with the normal flow of fluid, movement, and energy throughout the body.
John F. Barnes Myofascial Release is the primary tool in my toolbox, but I’m also very aware of the old saying: when all you have is a hammer, everything can start to look like a nail. Not every problem is solved by Myofascial Release. But because fascia surrounds, supports, and connects everything in the body, restrictions within it can influence far more than we may realize.
I also discuss why identifying something like a bulging or herniated disc doesn’t necessarily answer the question, “What forces caused it to happen?” Even when surgery or another medical procedure is necessary, addressing the fascial restrictions and forces acting throughout the body may be an important part of preparing for treatment, recovering afterward, and creating the best possible outcome.
