Day seven of Chad Daybell’s trial began with defense attorney John Prior continuing his cross-examination of Melanie Gibb, attempting to undermine her credibility and separate Chad from some of Lori Vallow’s actions. Prior pressed Gibb about inconsistencies in her memory, her admitted lie to police about having JJ Vallow, and the fact that investigators had never taken possession of her phone, emails or social-media accounts. He also questioned her involvement in fringe religious beliefs involving portals, previous lives and the casting out of dark spirits, apparently trying to show jurors that Gibb herself had participated in many of the ideas she was now attributing to Chad and Lori. Gibb acknowledged that Chad had never directly told her he intended to harm Tammy Daybell, JJ or Tylee Ryan, but she maintained that Chad had repeatedly predicted Tammy would die young and that Chad and Lori had begun discussing a future together within months of meeting. On redirect, prosecutors tried to rehabilitate Gibb by emphasizing that her recollection had not been altered by conversations with prosecutors and by distinguishing ordinary religious concepts from the much more extreme light-and-dark classifications Chad and Lori had developed.

The focus then shifted dramatically when former FBI Special Agent Douglas Hart took the stand and began walking jurors through messages recovered from Lori’s “Lollytime” iCloud account. The texts showed that Chad and Lori’s relationship had become intensely romantic and sexual almost immediately after Charles Vallow was killed, even though Chad remained married to Tammy. Hart testified that the messages showed the affair was not merely spiritual or emotional but physical and sexual, and jurors saw messages in which Chad and Lori discussed eventually being together openly and living in Hawaii. Just two days after Charles’ death, Chad texted Lori that he believed a woman Hart understood to be Tammy would soon be “gone,” and other messages showed Chad comparing his home life to Harry Potter living under the stairs before escaping to adventures with his “goddess lover.” Hart also discussed an autobiographical story Chad had written about himself and Lori under the names James and Elena, portraying their relationship as something ordained across previous lives. The testimony gave prosecutors a powerful chronological picture of Chad and Lori planning a future together while Tammy was still alive and only days after Charles Vallow had been killed.
