Deep beneath the hills of Central Texas lies a network of reinforced‑concrete tunnels built during the Cold War to store and maintain America’s nuclear weapons. Known as Killeen Base (later incorporated into West Fort Hood), the heavily guarded facility featured blast doors, underground storage rooms, and structures designed to absorb the shock of a nuclear attack.
Covers how 25 rural communities were displaced to make way for the installation, why German prisoners of war worked on nearby Texas farms, and Elvis Presley’s six months of training at Fort Hood. Also explores the underground complex’s engineering, its Cold War nuclear mission, and its modern use for military training.
