Friction is easy to interpret as a reason to stop.

Something feels difficult.

The process is frustrating.

You keep running into the same obstacle.

And your first instinct is often to push harder—or walk away.

But friction can contain information.

Use Friction As An Instruction explores how resistance can sometimes tell you what needs to change.

Maybe the goal is right, but the method is wrong.

Maybe you're forcing something that needs a different approach.

Maybe you're missing a skill.

Maybe the timing isn't right.

Or maybe the obstacle is showing you that the thing you're pursuing isn't actually worth the cost.

Friction doesn't automatically mean "quit."

It means pay attention.

Ask:

What exactly is creating the resistance?

Is the difficulty temporary, or does it keep repeating?

What would make this easier without lowering the standard?

Am I supposed to push through this—or learn from it?

This distinction matters.

Some friction is the normal cost of growth.

Learning something new is uncomfortable.

Building discipline is uncomfortable.

Having an honest conversation is uncomfortable.

Trying again after failure is uncomfortable.

But other friction is a warning.

If the same problem keeps appearing despite your best efforts, simply applying more force may not solve it.

You may need a new strategy.

Sometimes the instruction hidden inside the obstacle is:

Slow down.

Ask for help.

Change the process.

Set a boundary.

Learn something.

Or choose a different direction.

The goal isn't to make life frictionless.

A life with no resistance wouldn't teach you much.

The goal is to become curious about resistance.

Don't automatically treat difficulty as proof that you're failing.

And don't automatically treat difficulty as proof that you're on the right path either.

Use the friction as information.

Then decide what the information is telling you to do.

Push.

Adjust.

Pause.

Or walk away.

Use friction as an instruction.
