Sometimes people don't ignore a request because they don't care.
Sometimes they simply don't know how to answer it.
The question is too vague.
The decision is too complicated.
The expectations are unclear.
Or the request requires them to solve five different problems before they can respond to the first one.
Make the Request Easier to Answer explores a simple idea:
If you want a useful response, make it easier for someone to give you one.
Instead of:
"What do you think about everything?"
Try:
"Which of these two options would you choose?"
Instead of:
"Can you help me with this?"
Try:
"Could you look at this one section and tell me if it makes sense?"
Instead of:
"We need to figure out our future."
Try:
"Can we decide where we're going to live first?"
Specificity creates movement.
A clear request gives the other person something they can actually respond to.
This doesn't mean making your needs smaller.
It means making them understandable.
Ask yourself:
What exactly am I asking for?
Does the other person know what a useful answer looks like?
Can they answer this without guessing what I mean?
Am I asking one question—or five questions disguised as one?
This matters in relationships.
At work.
In friendships.
In negotiations.
And even in the conversations you have with yourself.
When a request is too broad, people often respond with hesitation, defensiveness, or silence.
Then we interpret that response as rejection.
But sometimes the problem isn't willingness.
It's ambiguity.
Make the path to "yes" clear.
Make the path to "no" clear.
And make the question specific enough that either answer actually means something.
You don't need to control someone's response.
You can only improve the quality of the request you're putting in front of them.
So before asking someone to solve the problem, ask yourself whether you've made the problem easy enough to answer.
Clear request.
Clear question.
Clear next step.
Make the request easier to answer.
