We talk a lot about mitochondria on this show, but usually in the context of our own aging. This week we go back to the beginning.

Dr. Josh Madsen runs three pediatric clinics treating some of the toughest cases in the country: nonverbal autism, traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, genetic disorders. After thousands of case histories, he's found the same underlying pattern again and again. It isn't a behavior problem. It's an energy problem.

We talk about primitive reflexes, the automatic movements that should disappear in the first year of life, and what it means when they linger. We talk about the moro reflex and why it shows up in anxious, easily triggered kids. We talk about his own family's health crisis from a moldy house, and the shockingly high chlorine levels he found in his new home's tap water.

Josh built an acronym, TIMED, for the five things most likely to disrupt a child's mitochondria: toxins, infections, mitochondrial disruptors, emotional stress, and diet. Once you hear it, you won't unsee it in your own kid, or honestly, in yourself.

If you're a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, or anyone who spends time around kids, this episode gives you a completely different lens for the next meltdown you witness. And a much kinder one.
