Most of us have no real sense of how much sunlight our home, our neighborhood, or our daily route actually receives. Georg Molzer and Dave Wallace built Shadowmap to change that. It's a real-time 3D global tool that shows exactly where sunlight lands, at any time of day, any day of the year, anywhere on Earth.
Georg came to this work through a melanoma diagnosis that left him told to avoid the sun forever. He didn't. Through years of listening to his body, rebuilding his circadian rhythms, and letting go of medical advice that felt wrong, he returned to the sun and then built an app to help others find it. Dave discovered Shadowmap at a government tech expo in Dubai, zoomed in on his house in the UK, and immediately understood why he'd spent years feeling like something was missing. They met at a tech expo in Dubai and decided to team up to bring sun mapping to the world.
Shadowmap now serves over 700,000 users per month and just launched Sunscore, the world's first sunlight metric, in partnership with Redfin, one of the largest real estate platforms in the US. Forty-four percent of people would choose a smaller home if it had better sunlight. That instinct already exists. This tool makes it legible.
We talk about Georg's melanoma and Hashimoto's journey, Dave's SAD and his conservatory turned solarium, the surprising uses people find for Shadowmap (including dating 19th century paintings), and why making sunlight a conscious variable in how we live is one of the most important shifts we can make right now.
