Why do some students pick up a language quickly while others struggle in the same classroom? In this episode of SLA Insights, Dr. Jennifer Noonan explores language learning aptitude and what it means for teaching ancient languages.
She looks at four areas researchers study: sensitivity to sounds, recognizing language patterns, working memory, and combinations of abilities used for particular tasks. She then shares ways instructors can help students build skills, use their strengths, and learn alongside classmates with different abilities.
A student’s starting point can affect how they learn, but it does not determine how far they can go.
