The Iranian Revolution of 1979 saw the Shah of Iran being toppled in a popular revolution. Led by Ayatollah Khomeini, this new Islamic Republic of Iran sought to impose its hard-line brand of Shia Islam over the country, and export it across the Middle East. Nearly forty-five years later, Iran has been grappling with mass demonstrations after the death of a young woman in police custody.
