When the Bolsheviks came to power in the October Revolution of 1917, it was the first time since 1789 that a European power had fallen to such a radical ideology. In doing so, they brought Russia down the path of totalitarianism and famine. Eventually, they would go on to lead a global struggle for ideological supremacy which dominated the second half of the twentieth century. To many, the creation of the Soviet Union seems a foregone conclusion... but what if these events had played out differently?
