Kouri Richins’ attempt to win a new trial now intersects with criminal charges against two sheriffs. Wasatch County Sheriff Jared Rigby and former Summit County Sheriff Dave Edmunds pleaded not guilty after a grand jury accused them of obstructing justice in connection with her prosecution. An important part of the story remains behind redactions in the charging documents.
Before Kouri’s murder trial, prosecutors received an anonymous letter containing allegations about Detective Eric Mainord. According to reporting on search warrant affidavits, the dispute also involved Mainord’s decision to run against Rigby for sheriff. Investigators examined whether accusations against the detective were being used to derail a political challenge and interfere with the prosecution.
That development gave Richins’ defense something to cite. Following her March 2026 conviction for poisoning her husband Eric, her lawyers sought a new trial based on claimed unfairness. They filed a sealed request for more time so the separate obstruction inquiry could develop. Prosecutor Brad Bloodworth countered that the new complaint did not match the bias argument Richins originally made about the judge’s conduct during trial.
The judge denied the requested pause, and the defense withdrew its request. The allegations against Rigby and Edmunds are pending; neither has been convicted. Detective Mainord, despite his investigative role, did not testify before the jury.
