Christa Pike received two doses of pentobarbital during Tennessee’s September 30 execution attempt and survived. The Tennessee Department of Correction says it complied with its protocol, which did not permit an additional step after the backup dose. The state’s own description has become central to questions about what that protocol anticipated.
The warning signs were in litigation before Pike entered the execution chamber. Her lawyers described a blood condition and difficult IV access. Tennessee disputed the risks, citing routine blood draws and accessible veins. The execution proceeded after testimony before a special master.
Pike’s lawyers allege the medication leaked outside the veins, causing injuries. The state has not accepted their explanation. On October 7, a court ordered officials to preserve the lines, needles, drugs and records used that night. An outside review will also examine the failure.
New 911 recordings reveal confusion after the attempt. A call for help was initially treated as potentially false because the request could not be immediately verified. Emergency responders were delayed entering the prison while staff and dispatchers sorted out the warning. Pike was hospitalized, regained consciousness, and later returned to prison.
