On a quiet road in County Roscommon, Ireland, a low hump of stone hides a crawl-space entrance into the dark. Locals call it the Cave of the Cats, and according to ancient tradition, it is where Samhain, and maybe Halloween itself, was born. This Halloween week on Destination Terror, we visit Oweynagat, the so-called Gate to Hell at Rathcroghan, the legendary seat of Queen Medb. In tonight's original story, a woman inherits a farm beside the cave and is given four rules for the last night of October.
Shut the gate. Leave a bowl of water on the sill. Stay out of the back field. And whatever you do, do not count the flock. Then we step out of the story to explore the real history behind the legends: the Morrígan's chariot, the pigs that multiplied when counted, birds with poisoned breath, and the tale of Nera, who followed an army into the Otherworld on Samhain night. Turn down the lights, and make sure your door is locked.
