Inside GAZELLE: Filmmaker Nadir Sarıbacak’s Bold Creative Directing Debut

Dela

Actor-turned-first-time-director Nadir Sarıbac chats about his new indie film GAZELLE. This new film follows the lead character 'Yakup', a Turkish music teacher seeking asylum in New York while his wife and young daughter remain in Turkey under surveillance. When his case stalls, he faces an impossible choice: wait what could be years for legal reunification, or risk everything to bring his family over by dangerous, clandestine means. Inspired by the real stories of the filmmakers and the people around them, GAZELLE is a psychological drama about exile, separation, and the lengths one man will go to keep his family together. The core of the storyline is partly based on Nadir's own life story earlier in his career. The film won the Vanguard Audience Award at its world premiere at VIFF, had its U.S. premiere at the 61st Chicago International Film Festival, and won the Industry Choice Award at Dances With Films: New York. Leonard Maltin called it "a vivid and empathetic piece of storytelling."
