Romance scammers stole more than $1 billion from Americans in 2025, and award‑winning journalist Mariana van Zeller is determined to uncover how they operate. To do it, she goes undercover — deliberately becoming the target of a romance scam. By allowing herself to be drawn in, she exposes the tactics, technologies, and psychological manipulation that make these schemes not just widespread but alarmingly effective. Her investigation ultimately leads her to the scammer’s true identity, pushing her into a real‑world journey across West Africa to confront him face‑to‑face. Also included in this interview is documentary participant Leslie Pickett, who shares her story of being a scam victim. It's all profiled in the new National Geographic documentary SUPER SCAM ME, which premieres Saturday, October 17th at 9 PM EDT and Streams on Disney+ and Hulu.
