In the dining hall at my sleepaway camp, there was a banner for all to read:

"Winners look to solve problems. Losers look for excuses."

The wording may be a bit cringe, but after reading that banner three times a day, for eight weeks every summer, for seven summers, I walked away with an important lesson.

Of course I don't think that people are literally winners or losers.

What I took away was much simpler: when something doesn't go according to plan, you can choose to make excuses, or you can decide to go and find a solution.
