This was the revenge match, and Eala left nothing to chance. Oliynykova was the one player in this section with a win over her โ the Ukrainian beat her 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 in the first round of the WTA 500 in Strasbourg back in May. Four months later, on Grand Slam centre stage, Eala flipped it comprehensively, racing through the opening set for the loss of a single game and closing it out in straight sets.
It means back-to-back straight-sets wins in New York after her 6-1, 6-2 dismissal of American qualifier Mary Stoiana in round one, and a place in the third round of a Grand Slam. She arrived here as the highest-seeded Filipina in Grand Slam history at No. 17, off the summer that changed everything โ the first WTA singles title ever won by a player from the Philippines at the DC Open in Washington, past Qinwen Zheng, Leylah Fernandez, Elina Svitolina, Naomi Osaka and world No. 3 Jessica Pegula, followed by a Toronto round of 16 and a rise into the world's top 20.
