Remember when Disney's Aladdin decided to become a prince? He figured out what a prince was supposed to look like, wear, and sound like, threw himself a grand parade, and played the part. And it worked, for a while. But keeping up that costume every single day was exhausting.

I see a version of this with new leaders all the time. We find a boss or mentor we admire and try to lead exactly like them. It works until it doesn't feel like us anymore.

In part two of my Leadership Shift series, I'm talking about the foundation: really understanding yourself. I share the difference between copying a leader and being inspired by one, my own story of trying to lead like a mentor early in my HR career, and the four areas of self-awareness I come back to again and again: your values, your natural strengths and preferences (and their shadow sides), how you show up under pressure and how you land on others, and your mindset and beliefs.

You'll leave with a few questions to help you name what you value most in how you lead, the strength people count on you for, and what it costs when that strength goes too far.
