I’m talking with Todd Elliott, author of The Cunning Farmer, about an idea that sounds simple until you really follow it through:

What if farming and magick were never separate things?

For most of human history, working the land also meant working with timing, prayer, offerings, spirits of place, ancestors, celestial forces, plants as intelligences, and the strange relationship between consciousness and matter.

Todd is a working farmer as well as a practitioner of magick, and his book asks us to consider something wonderfully provocative:

What if the old farmers weren’t merely being superstitious?
What if they understood agriculture as a participatory technology ... a way of negotiating with the visible and invisible forces that make life grow?

We’ll be talking land spirits, lunar planting, weather magick, astrological forces, plant intelligence, the dead, theurgy, and why the farmer may once have occupied a role much closer to priest, magician and mediator between worlds than simply “food producer.”

If you’re interested in magick as something operational rather than decorative, I think you’re going to love this one.
