The stock market loses money surprisingly often.Since 1928, the S&P 500 has had a negative return in 26 of 98 years.

That's roughly one out of every four years.

And that's the statistic everyone focuses on.

But when you stop looking at individual years and start looking at longer holding periods, the picture changes dramatically.

I pulled nearly 100 years of S&P 500 data and calculated the annualized return for every possible holding period from 1 year all the way out to 40 years.

What I found was surprising.

At 1 year, 26.5% of periods lost money.

At 5 years, 11.7%.At 10 years, 5.6%.

At 15 years, just 1.2%.

And at 16 years?Zero.

Not one 16-year period in the dataset produced a negative annualized return.

This video looks at what that statistic actually means, why the stock market's worst crashes can distort our perception of long-term investing, and the potentially enormous cost of choosing "safety" instead.

I'll also show you what happens to $10,000 when it compounds at the historical average return over 40 years.

And the final statistic might be the most important one of all.If you're interested in the numbers behind the stocks you own, check out Yieldr.
