Episode 237 - Why Your Family Keeps Repeating the Same Patterns of Conflict and Distance

Have you ever wondered why your family keeps having the same arguments, falling into the same roles, or getting stuck in the same patterns over and over again?

Maybe you keep ending up in conflict with your adult child. Maybe one person in the family takes on too much responsibility while someone else pulls away. Or maybe tension gets so uncomfortable that people stop talking, avoid difficult conversations, or involve someone else in the conflict.

These patterns are not random.

In this episode, I introduce four common ways families respond to stress and anxiety through the lens of Bowen Family Systems Theory: conflict, triangles, overfunctioning and underfunctioning, and emotional distancing. These patterns can show up in almost every family, including strained parent-adult child relationships.

The problem is that these family relationship patterns usually do not resolve the underlying issue. Instead, they move stress and anxiety around the family system, which can lead to resentment, defensiveness, emotional disconnection, and increasingly difficult relationships.

In this episode, you will learn:

  • How to recognize the four common family patterns that develop under stress: conflict, triangulation, overfunctioning and underfunctioning, and emotional distancing.
  • Why you may keep having the same arguments with your adult child, even when both of you want the relationship to improve.
  • How overfunctioning can unintentionally create more dependence, especially when parents continue managing responsibilities their adult children need to learn to handle themselves.
  • Why emotional distancing can feel like relief at first but create deeper disconnection over time, including less communication, fewer invitations, surface-level conversations, or avoiding difficult topics.
  • How changing your own response can begin to change the family system, even when other family members are not ready to change.

Understanding these unhealthy family patterns matters because you cannot change a pattern you cannot see. When you begin recognizing what happens during family conflict, stress, anxiety, and emotional disconnection, you can stop reacting automatically and start choosing a different response.

And changing the pattern does not require fixing everyone else.

It begins with noticing how you respond when family relationships become stressful, learning how to stay more grounded, and making small, consistent changes in the way you show up. Those changes can create a ripple effect throughout the entire family system.

If you are struggling with a distant or strained relationship with your adult child, this episode will help you better understand what may be happening beneath the conflict and where you can begin making meaningful changes.
