Episode 275 — The Demon in the Forest

A man enters the forest believing that God will protect him. He leaves wondering whether God was ever listening.

Matthieu is a charcoal burner living beside an ancient forest. He knows the woods, respects them and understands that they are far older than his village, his church and the people who believe they own them.

But one evening, while walking home to his wife and children, Matthieu encounters something impossible.

A creature with too many limbs.

A thing with too many eyes.

A demon—or something far older than the word demon.

At first, Matthieu believes his Christian faith protects him. When the creature recoils from his prayers, he becomes convinced that God has given him power over the monster.

But the creature isn't trying to kill him.

It is leading him deeper into the forest.

Then Matthieu hears the sound of his daughter crying.

And when the creature finally speaks, it uses his daughter's voice.

What follows is not simply an encounter with a monster. It is an attack on Matthieu's faith, his certainty and his belief that God is watching over him.

Because sometimes the most terrifying question isn't:

"Does God exist?"

It is:

"If God exists… why did He let this happen?"

Meanwhile, deep within the forest, Belphastus is watching.

The ancient sorcerer feeds upon human fear, hatred, misery and despair. He doesn't need to kill Matthieu. He only needs to make him doubt.

And Matthieu's doubt is delicious.

Belphastus has discovered something more powerful than fear: a crack in someone's faith.

As the villagers welcome Matthieu home, Belphastus watches from the darkness and begins to understand that something far more dangerous than a monster has been created.

Doubt.

Fear.

Despair.

And the knowledge that whatever lives in the forest may have followed Matthieu home.
