Military rule and martial law were present in many East Asian countries throughout the early through to the late 21st century. This culminated in decades of state violence, repression and civilian massacres. An infamous event took place in Taiwan after World War 2 following this same authoritarian pattern; The February 28 Incident, the focus of this episode. The event's aftermath and highly commendable u-turn in the government response nowadays, after the country's rapid democratization will also be highlighted. This was a watershed event in Taiwan's history, which would permanently transform its sociopolitical landscape with the effects still seen today.
