This week we look at one of the Bard’s least performed and most underrated comedies, Love’s Labour’s Lost.
Believed to have been written between 1588-1597 the play transports us to Navarre, where a young King, along with his three friends (Ferdinand ((The King)), Berowne, Longaville and Dumaine), take an oath, that for the next three years they will not fall into the temptation of women and will commit their time to studying and fasting.
However, their pact is quickly put to the test as the Princess of France (played by Sarah at the Edinburgh Fringe recently) arrives on a state visit with her three maids of honour (Rosalind, Maria and Katherine).
Quickly, the men realise they cannot stick to their oath and fall deeply in love with the Princess and her three counterparts, abandoning their studies and fasts falling into temptation!
The play is a commentary on when it comes to choosing between a life of academic excellence and human desire, there is only going to be one winner. Human nature.
As well as, the gender dynamics between the characters, as the women with their superior intellect and maturity run rings around the lovesick men. Showing that a life committed to something you think you should have is meaningless, when all you need is love. Not to mention, that to win a woman’s love, you have to fix yourself first.
Regarded as the lightest, frothiest comedy with a sharp twist at its conclusion, Love’s Labour’s Lost is a beautiful piece, with many hidden gems, that tell us to be ourselves and not what the world wants us to be.
