To understand the Cornell 7, we must first understand the dynamics of brotherhood within fraternity life. Loyalty, secrecy, allegiance, and the oathsof brotherhood are central to examining how the members responded to Jane Doeduring and after her reported rape.

How could so many people know what was happening and yet fail to intervene or report it to the police? What happens when loyalty to the brotherhood becomes more important than protecting someone who has been harmed?

These are questions that reach far beyond one fraternity.

The dynamics of brotherhood are also central to understanding the experiences of ritual abuse survivors, whose voices this podcast is proud to amplify. To understand their stories, we must examine the systems of secrecy, loyalty, intimidation, and mutual protection that survivors describe within the groups that abused them.

The Cornell 7 case offers a disturbing window into these dynamics. It is a microcosm of the kinds of closed systems that many ritual abuse survivors have spent years trying to expose.

I encourage listeners to follow this case closely. Look beyond the actions of the individuals involved and examine the power of the group. Consider how allegiance is maintained, how silence is enforced, and how belonging to a brotherhood can provide protection and privilege at the expense of those whohave been harmed.

These dynamics are not confined to fraternities. They can emerge wherever loyalty to a group is placed above accountability.

A Note from Lisa

I come to these conversations as a survivor, advocate, author, and educator. I hold a bachelor’s degree in education, but I am not a licensed counselor or mental health professional.

The conversations and information shared on Only God Rescued Me are intended to encourage, educate, and give survivors a place to tell their stories. They are not a substitute for professional counseling, medical care, or individualized mental health advice.

My perspective is shaped by my own lived experience as a survivor and by what I have learned through listening to and walking alongside other survivors. I encourage each listener to make the choices that are right for their own healing and, when needed, to seek support from qualified professionals.
