As we celebrate Labor Day, we recognize the economic and social contributions of workers. Fr. Chris Alar’s teaching reminds us of the Christian meaning of work: labor is not only about productivity but about serving, loving, and honoring the gifts of the Creator. Work can become a path to sanctification when it is offered to God. As the Christian tradition says, ora et labora—pray and work.

Today, during the Fourth Industrial Revolution of artificial intelligence, this message is especially important. Technology can improve productivity, but we must never place productivity above human dignity. AI and technology should serve the human person, not replace our understanding of the value of human work. Labor Day reminds us that work has dignity and, when united with prayer and love, can become an offering to God.
